CBD Complete Education Guide
Dog owners care just as much about their fur babies as they do their biological children; so of course finding a more holistic approach is vital in maintaining a healthy happy pooch. Researchers believe the percentage of dogs that die due to cancer is so high because nowadays pet owners take such great care of their pets. Pet parents are always in search of healthy diets and holistic approaches when it comes to treatment, which has lengthened the average lifespan of dogs. With a longer life comes the increased risk of cancer in geriatric dogs. With that said, if you are in search of a natural approach to keeping your dog healthy and pain free consider CBD infused hemp and salmon oil.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol, commonly referred to as CBD, is an organic compound found in Cannabis and hemp.
CBD yields a plethora of medical benefits without the psychoactive component (feeling of being “high”). Both marijuana and hemp come from the same plant (Cannabis Sativa; however they each have very different properties. Within the Cannabis plant are over 60 Cannabinoids; the two main ones being, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). Marijuana contains high levels of THC which causes a sensation of being “high”, where as CBD is non psychoactive and provides a more natural alternative to treating ailments not only in humans, but in dogs as well.
Is CBD oil and industrial hemp the same as medical marijuana?
Medical marijuana is simply the legalized form of marijuana, which is still high in THC and low in CBD. Alternately, Cannabidiol oil is high in medicinal benefits, low in THC, and is legal on all levels not just for those with a prescription.
What is the difference between CBD infused hemp oil and standard hemp oil?
Standard hemp oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant and contains almost untraceable amounts of CBD if any. Typical uses for hemp oil include: cooking (nutrient rich), moisturizers and lotions, as a base for different forms of plastic, and biodiesel fuel.
CBD oil is made from the actual flowers, leaves, and stalks of the hemp plant giving it a high Cannabidiol content (in comparison to hemp oil). CBD oil can range in CBD content anywhere from 2%-99% depending on the product and purity. Common uses for CBD include but are not limited to treatments for cancer, inflammatory disorders, anxiety, depression, and neurodegenerative disorders.
CBD derived from hemp oil is so low in THC that it is legal to be used in hemp based products for dogs and humans alike in all 50 states. Hemp based products are so common you can find them at almost any store you walk into; from creams and lotions to nutritional additives at meal time. High quality CBD infused hemp oil has non detectable levels of THC.
The main differences between the two oils lies within the parts of the plant used for oil extraction, CBD content, and of course its end use which can be very different.
How does CBD oil work?
Humans along with other mammals have cannabinoid receptor sites, which make up the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). These specific sites can be found within the central nervous system, the brain, immune cells, and peripheral organs allowing CBD hemp oil to treat both chronic and acute conditions and illnesses.
Within the body are two well known systems that work alongside each other to maintain a healthy environment, the immune system and the central nervous system (CNS). Not as well known, but equally important in regulating executive functions within the body is the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). The primary responsibility of the ECS is to regulate many functions of the Central Nervous System through cannabinoid receptor sites. CBD attaches to a protein and has the ability to change a receptors behavior. These receptors are categorized as CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors can be found throughout the body but are primarily found in the brain; including areas responsible for emotion, memory, cognition, movement, coordination, pain and sensory perception, endocrine and autonomic functions. CB2 receptors on the other hand are most abundant in the immune system, helping with inflammation and pain.
How can my dog benefit from CBD hemp oil?
There are many ways our pets can benefit from CBD hemp oil but the five most common are explained below.
Top 5 Benefits
Inflammation is a common and normal bodily response to a perceived threat. There are four components seen with inflammation which are redness, swelling, heat, and pain. When an area of the body swells, the liquid causing the swelling contains immune cells that work hard to protect it from harmful pathogens. The endocannabinoid system reacts to inflammation by increasing the number of CB2 receptors for activation. Once these receptors are activated by CBD infused hemp oil, inflammation and pain decrease while immune cells increase to speed healing. The best aspect about using CBD infused hemp oil to treat your pets inflammation, is that you’re also treating the pain that accompanies it simultaneously. Many medications prescribed for ailments with chronic inflammation such as arthritis have a long list of undesirable side effects and do not always target both.
There are many different cases and situations that can place stress and anxiety on dogs; because they don’t know what is causing panic or how to manage it like humans do they tend to be destructive or can even place their own life in danger. Most commonly pet owners cite holidays like Fourth of July for causing their pets distress due to the loud pops and bangs that can go on for hours, separation anxiety when leaving their dog home alone, triggers for dogs that may have previously been in abusive home, and phobias. If you have ever experienced anxiety or panic you understand how terrifying and exhausting it can be, which is why many dog owners choose to medicate their pet with CBD infused hemp oil. CBD works naturally to alleviate stress and anxiety not only in dogs but in humans as well. Anxiety is often treated with medication but again prescription medication tends to have undesirable side effects.
As dogs age, they tend to experience pain more frequently which can be due to a variety of reasons ranging from Arthritis to an injury. The fact that the body is not as quick to repair itself as it once was, makes CBD infused hemp oil with Salmon oil a great option for all dogs, especially elderly dogs. CBD in and of itself is an anti inflammatory but it also works to not only relieve pain but promote healthy cell growth at the source of the injury.
A tell tale sign that your pet has an allergy is scratching. Unfortunately, the only way a dog knows how to combat a nagging itch is to scratch. The problem with scratching is it can cause an open wound that could lead to infection. A dog can either have an allergy to an environmental element (ie dust, mold, pollen) or ingredients found in their food (chicken, corn, beef, etc). One of the most common skin conditions plaguing dogs is Atopic Dermatitis, a chronic inflammatory disease linked with allergies. Most pet owners treat this condition with either vaccines, topical creams and shampoos, or medication. These options all offer promising results in the short term, but are not meant as long term solutions due to the side effects they pose. With that being said, many pet parents are in search of something more natural. There are both CB1 and CB2 receptors found in keratinocytes (the predominant cell found in the epidermis), making CBD oil a great alternative.CBD works to maintain homeostasis within the skin through cell proliferation. CBD infused hemp oil also helps relieve skin dryness due to its high amount of essential fatty acid (EFA) content. In addition, salmon oil is extremely high in EFA’s making the combination of hemp oil, CBD, and Salmon oil a major contender in the fight against skin conditions.
5.Cancer and Tumor Reduction
Over 6 million dogs will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Cancer is the leading cause of death at 47% , and chances only increase once a dog turns 10. As we know Cannabidiol plays a huge role in maintaining overall homeostasis within the body by activating CB1 receptors to help fight free radicals and promote healthy cell growth. Research has found that CBD activates the peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPARS) located within a cell’s nucleus; when a PPAR-gamma site is activated it causes an antiproliferative effect giving it the ability to induce tumor regression. There is also an abundance of anecdotal evidence supporting CBD’s anti- tumor properties as well. Numerous pet parents cite CBD as the sole reason their pet is alive after a tumor(s) was discovered and was treated with CBD infused hemp oil.
